Social Media for Popular Music Creators: Labour Exploitation or Content Creator’s Paradise?
Tue 9 Feb, 13-15, Stora Glasburen (PC249) in the Primus building
Language: English

The seminar presents the ongoing research project “Export Potential of Swedish Music in Times of Web 2:0”, supported by the Swedish Institute. The social media strategies of the artists creating popular music in Sweden lie in the focus of the presentation.

Popular music has historically been aimed at young proactive audiences more than any other branch of the cultural industries. However, with the decline of the traditional record industry and the growth of participatory media, it is increasingly the artists who are responsible for establishing their own fan base and upholding audience loyalty. What are artists’ strategies to do so in Sweden? How and with what agendas do artists use social media? How does their music find its ways to close and distant audiences? These and related questions will be addressed and illustrated by the recent study cases.
